Schwarzpils

Also Known As:   Schwarzbier, Schwarzes Pils

Translated, it means "Black Beer," the Schwarzpils is a dark beer with a long tradition throughout Germany, but especially in Thuringia (Thüringen) and Saxony (Sachsen).

Beer Characteristics
Malt-accented dark brew. Rich, mild, medium-bodied. Firm, creamy foam. Clean, lager taste with hints of chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. Very dark brown in color; opaque.

Serving Suggestions
Optimal serving temperature is 46° F (8° C). Best served in a tall, fluted or tulip-shaped glass.

Food Pairings
Goes especially well with steak and game.

History
Schwarzpils dates back to 1543 and was first produced in Thuringia (Thüringen) and Saxony (Sachsen). 

Additional Information
A popular mixed drink in Germany, known as Greifswalder or Dunkles Radler, is a combination of Schwarzpils and cola.
