History
Doppelbock beer originated in the 19th century and was first brewed by the Paulaner monks. During the Lent season, the monks were required to go through long periods of fasting during which time no solid food was allowed to be consumed. Because the monks believed that liquids not only cleansed the body but also the soul, they would make plenty of liquid bread from their grain, and then drink it in large quantities during Lent.
